Kodaikanal Hill Station Overview

History of Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal is the only hill station in India developed by Americans. In 1821, Lieutenant B. S. Ward, a British surveyor, was the first European to visit Kodaikanal while searching for a healthy retreat for missionaries working in Madurai. Due to its pleasant climate and clean air, Kodaikanal soon became a favored destination among elite families.

In 1863, Sir Vere Hendry Levinge created the famous Kodai Lake by damming three streams. The Boat Club was formed in 1890, allowing tourists to enjoy boating activities. Over time, churches, schools, clubs, and colonial structures emerged, shaping Kodaikanal into a popular tourist destination.
